Moving Checklist
Six to Eight Weeks Before Move Date
- Review your relocation package (if you have one) to determine your moving and moving company benefits.
- Contact a reputable mover. Check with the Better Business Bureau should you need assistance choosing the right mover.
- Decide whether you will do some packing or if you will have the moving company handle the packing for you.
- Set your date for the move to occur.
- Arrange for storage unit if needed.
- Begin making an inventory list and/or take pictures, room by room of all items to be packed and moved.
- Start a log and keep receits of all moving expenses as they may be tax deductible.
- Give Schools and Day Care Centers notice of move.
- Arange for school records to be transferred.
- Arrange for copies of medical records and possible referrals to new physicians.
- Notify insurance companies of changes and new policies needed.
- As you begin to pack your items, label each box with destination room.
- Put all important papers in a fire safe box and keep in a safe place for the move.
Four to Six Weeks Before Move Date
- Notify the post office that you are moving. Forms can be picked up at any post office, from your mail carrier or online at www.usps.com.
- Begin useing items in the pantry and freezer and only buy what you will need prior to the move.
- Prepair a list of friends, relatives and vendors you do business with that will need to know of your move. Below is a possible list of people to notify.

Two to Three Weeks Before Moving Date
- Notify your mover of any changes to items being moved, move dates, etc.
- Have a going away party for children and friends.
- Make family travel plans hotel rooms, car rental, airline tickets, etc).
- If driving, have your car serviced.
One to Two Weeks Before Moving Date
- Have Draperies & Rugs cleaned. Leave them in the plastic wrap they are returned in for the move.
- Empty any lockers at the health club, bowling alley, etc.
- Return library books, videos, etc.
- Make a list of items you plan to keep with you during the move inclding important papersm jewelry, etc.
- Arrange for disconnection of transfers of utilities. Make sure to keep utilities in your name for the move date.
- Arrange to have utilties turned on at your new address.
One to Two Days Before Moving Day
- Defrost refrigerator and freezer
- Purchase Travelers Checks if needed
- Reconcile and close bank accounts.
- Complete packing
Moving Day
- Remain on the premises while movers are packing and loading the truck.
- Make sure the mover has the correct delivery address.
- Prior to leaving, make sure there are no items left behind, water is shut off, furnace and a/c are shut off, light switches turned off, utilities arranged for disconnection, windows shut and locked, old house keys surrendered.
- Clean the house.
Delivery Day
- Remain on the premises while movers are moving items into your new home.
- Check all items as the are unloaded for damage. if you notice damage, let the mover know asap and make a note on movers paperwork (bill of lading) of damage.
After Move (Settling In)
- Check with post office to make sure mail is being forwarded.
- Register to Vote with your County Clerks Office
- Register your vehicle with the Dept. of Motor Vehicles
- Get a new driver's license at the local Dept. of Motor Vehicles
- Have your new veterinarian register your pets.
